How much of the board you cover in roulette is a very important element. There is little point covering a large amount of numbers (eg 25-30 numbers) because then your profit margin on a winning spin is small, and when one of the uncovered numbers hits the pain is large. In a way you have an expectation to win, which obviously makes a losing spin that much worse. Conversely a smaller coverage (8-16 numbers) means you arent expecting to win each time but when you do it feels good and has a much bigger profit margin.
It could be argued that it doesnt really matter because the odds are going to work out the same anyway, but that's shortsighted. Psychological factors always impact someones play, so try to get your coverage correct where a small winning streak can actually lead to big profits, and a small losing streak doesnt lead to a big loss.
Lets take a Tier bet for example. A tier bet is a certain portion of the wheel mainly around the 8-11 area. A tier bet is 8-11 split, 10-13 split, 23-24 split, 27-30 split, and 33-36 split (covers 10 numbers). This tier can be reinforced to 9 chips by adding the 5-8 split, the 10-11 split, the 13-16 split, the 30-33 split (covers 12 numbers).
Now if we go on a little good run on the reinforced tier and spin 11, 30, 4, 16, 22, 33, 0, 8, 7, 27 then are chips improve like this:
$100 starting balance (100 x $1 chips)
+26, +26, -9, +9, -9, +26, -9, +26, -9, +9
$186 end balance
With this bet we can afford to miss the tier (all 12 numbers) 10 times in a row, so there is a bit of a buffer there too.
So in summary getting the coverage balance is important, and when you run good dont spread the coverage too much but instead re-inforce your existing numbers more (eg adding some more surrounding splits, or even straight-ups). If you start with 12 numbers and are running good try to reinforce them up a bit without spreading the chips out to more than 16 numbers. You will still be expecting a losing spin, but if one of your numbers comes in you'll be hitting a big profit margin.
Another strategy in roulette is the double-up on even-money bets strategy (known as The Martingale System). I will illustrate it with an example. Say the chips are 25c. You bet 25c on Black and you keep doing that every spin until you have a losing bet. Then you bet 50c on black. If it wins, you drop back to 25c and repeat. If it loses you increase to $1 on black. If it wins, you drop back to 25c and repeat. If it loses you increase to $2 on black. Etc
Your bets are therefore:
25c
50c
$1
$2
$4
$8
$16
$32
$64
$128
Using this strategy you will consistanly make 25c profit every spin unless you are so unlucky to get 10 reds in a row.
Obviously you could in theory keep on going indefinately and therefore never ever lose, however there are obvious limiations with this. The main limitation is obvious you may run out of money. The other one is that most casinos will have a minimum and maximum bet for even-money bets. So they may have a range of 25c to $250 at one table, and a range of $5 to $500 at another, etc. Therefore you can find yourself being constrained in how many double-ups are possible either by the minimum bet or by the maximum bet.
Basically for it to work you just need to avoid a very bad streak. If you just want to jump in there and win 10 times ($2.50 quick profit) the vast likelihood is that you're going to achieve that without really going above about the $4 bet mark above.
Variations on that bet can be done by say picking 5 numbers and then placing 1 chip straight up on each. Then repeat for 4 losing spins. Then increase to 2 chips on each number and repeat for 3 losing spins. Then 3 chips on each number for 2 losing spins. Then 4 chip on each number again for 2 spins. Then 5 on each number again for 2 spins, then 6 on each number for 1 spin, 7 for 1 spin, and 8 for 1 spin.
Then your outcome may be something like this:
Chips lost 5,5,5,5,10,10,10,15,15,20
Then you finally hit one of your 5 numbers on the 11th spin.
You have wagered 120 chips
You get back 144 chips.
All of those are winning spins (all 16 of them). Obviously the chances of a long losing run are greater with this bet, but the reward for hitting at any point in the series is also greater. To give another example, if one of your 5 numbers hits on the 5th spin that would be 72 chips back after a total of 40 wagered (a 32 chip profit). Then if you are feeling very brave back to the beginning again with 1 chip on each to see if you can hit one of the 5 numbers in 16 spins once again. 275 chips is the amount need to complete all 16 bets, so at 25c chips you would need $68.75
